The Autumn Scrub

by Melissa Ringstaff, Director
With the crisp, cool air, the smokey frangrances, and the softness of light sweaters we know that Autumn has arrived. I love this time of year. As in the Spring, I feel the urge to clean the house from top to bottom to get it ready for the months ahead.

Before bringing out your stash of fall decorations - pumpkins, warm blankets, and other fall themed accessories, enlist your children and go about the house on a cleaning spree.

Today we did our major Autumn Cleaning.

  • Walls were washed.
  • Baseboards cleaned.
  • Furniture polished.
  • Windows opened and washed.
  • Closets purged.
  • Flannel sheets put on the beds.
  • Hardwood floors waxed.
  • Kitchen cabinets scrubbed.
  • China reorganized.

My children, all but the very youngest, were a tremendous help in the process. After breakfast, everyone lined up and instructions were given. Instead of the usual, "Go clean your room," approach, we worked together moving from one end of the house to the other; one room to the next.

This was a very efficient process. By midafternoon we had the entire house completed. So, for you mothers out there, don't feel bad about putting the children to work. Even my 4 year old scrubbed walls. Hint: The Magic Eraser(r) is easy for young ones to utilize on dirty walls!

When we had finished our work, the house smelled and looked wonderfully clean - ready to welcome the winter months.
